The history of Pachmarhi dates back to the time of Mahabharata. The Pandav Caves derived its name from the times when Pandava were hiding during the time of their exile. This resort was discovered when a British Soldier, Captain Forsyth sent a group of soldiers into the deep forests to quell the mutiny headed by brave Rani Laxmi Bai.

She was a great freedom fighter who fought against the British. Later a cantonment area was developed in Pachmarhi and several colonial buildings, bungalows and churches were constructed.
